Report: Purdue likely to see ex-'Last Chance U' QB under center in season opener vs. Nevada
Jeff Brohm may have to subscribe to Netflix to get some film on the quarterback Purdue will see on the field when it travels to Nevada on Aug. 30.
Nevada Sports Net reported on Saturday that fifth-year senior quarterback Christian Solano broke his throwing hand after hitting it on a helmet during practice. That injury likely means that Malik Henry — the former quarterback at Independence Community College and Last Chance U star — will be under center for the Wolf Pack in Week 1.
Solano was the only quarterback on the roster with starting experience at Nevada, but that was only in one game last fall.
“Senior quarterback Christian Solano hit his right hand on a helmet during practice this week and is expected to miss the rest of training camp and part of the regular season due to the injury,” said head coach Jay Norvell. “He is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days and we’re hopeful of his return around the start of conference play.”
For his career, Solano has completed 28-of-51 passes for 256 yards. He hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass and has tossed four interceptions.
Henry will continue to battle redshirt freshman Carson Strong for the starting job, but it seems that the former junior college quarterback was the biggest challenger to Solano. He has not thrown a pass at the FBS level while Strong threw one last season against Portland State.
Henry was one of the players of focus in Season 3 and Season 4 of Netflix’s docuseries Last Chance U.
Purdue and Nevada will clash in Reno on Friday, Aug. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET and the game will be aired on CBSSN.
