Ryan Cline just wanted something to help him remember one of the best tournament performances in the history of Purdue basketball.

On Saturday night, the Boilermakers steamrolled reigning national champion Villanova 87-61 on the way to their third-straight Sweet Sixteen appearance. Carsen Edwards scored a career-high 42 points, Matt Haarms had 18 and Ryan Cline had 12 points on four three-point baskets.

Those numbers alone made Saturday a night to remember. But Cline wanted something tangible to take with him. Something to remember Purdue’s tremendous performance at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.

According to Nate Barrett of the Journal & Courier, Cline attempted to take a “March Madness” rug from the arena, but didn’t get too far.

From the Journal & Courier:

Purdue basketball’s senior guard also wanted a keepsake.

“I’ve got the carpet, Coach Paint,” Cline said to Boilermakers coach Matt Painter, with the “March Madness” rug from the locker room rolled up and tucked under his arm.

An XL Center official — who had seen Florida State players attempt the same décor heist earlier in the night — intervened. Purdue could walk out of the arena with all the swagger due a team that had so completely eviscerated the defending national champion.

The rug, however, had to stay.

Purdue had one of the better shooting nights it enjoyed in the last month. The Boilermakers shot 53.7 percent from the floor and knocked down 16-of-30 three-point attempts in the victory.

Cline enjoyed a nice bounce-back performance as well. Against Old Dominion, the senior sharpshooter knocked down just one of 11 three-point attempts and finished the game with just five points.

Cline will have plenty of memories from Purdue’s epic performance from the XL Center on Saturday. But he won’t be headed back to West Lafayette with any souvenirs.
