Ryan Walters secured his first head coaching win on Saturday, but it was far from a typical game.

Facing Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, both teams had to wait with the initial kickoff delayed. Once the game did get rolling, it was not long before another delay halted the action and dragged on for 5 hours.

When the delay finally gave way to action, the Boilermakers blew a 17-point lead but rallied for a touchdown behind Hudson Card. When it was all said and done, Walters was understandably jacked up to land his first one.

In a passionate locker room speech, he awarded every member of the traveling team a game ball for staying focused throughout the delay and victory:

“I’m proud as hell of y’all for a couple of reasons. For us to go through the delay we had to, y’all stayed locked in and went out there and got a W… Stay disciplined, and you did,” said Walters. “They got no more points on the board, we went, got a score on the (bleeping) road with a 5-hour delay, so everybody that’s on the travel roster gets a (bleeped) game ball.”
