Ryan Walters started his tenure as a head coach over the weekend, finishing on the wrong side of a nail-biter with Fresno State. While there were some positives, Purdue was unable to get off the field defensively in the 39-35 loss.
Now, the Boilermakers must turn around and prepare for an intense ACC road trip against Virginia Tech. That means a matchup in Lane Stadium, a venue that always produces an electric atmosphere for the Hokies.
During his Monday press conference, Walters admitted he showed his team a clip of the iconic “Enter Sandman” entrance to show the team what they will be up against.
“Obviously an electric atmosphere. we showed a clip of ‘Enter Sandman’ in our team meeting last night, the Virginia Tech intro,” said Walters. “It will be the first time where all of us are traveling as a team, so it’s hard to do that on the road and the challenges that face us from a schematic standpoint.”
As for his first impressions of the Hokies, Walters acknowledged a very balanced team and an athletic quarterback as things to account for.
“Very balanced offensively, 11 and 12 personnel. QB is a big guy that’s more athletic than you want him to be,” Walters explained. “Very long team on both sides of the ball, big up front, big on the perimeter. Defensively you’re going to see a 4-2 shell… Our work is cut out for us for sure, gotta pay attention to the details and be confident in our technic and fundamentals.”
