The notion of faking injuries was once again a topic of conversation in a college football game. This time, it was the Music City Bowl that was put under the microscope.

Throughout the course of the game, several Purdue players hit the turf with injuries. Some looked legitimate, while others (most notably the one in the video below) appeared to be an attempt to slow down Tennessee’s up-tempo offense.

It happened multiple times throughout the game.

Purdue pulled out a thrilling 48-45 victory in overtime to defeat Tennessee in the Music City Bowl. After the game, Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel was asked if he thought there should be a “cooling off” period before an injured player should be allowed to return.

Heupel provided an interesting response.

“No, it’s crazy. The officials wanted that tonight,” Heupel said. “I thought that was pretty comical they came up to me and said that.”

A reporter followed up by asking if the officials were talking about a potential rule change. He confirmed.

“Yeah,” he said. “They think there needs to be a rule change.”

Because of how quickly Tennessee’s offense moves, it was a theme for defenses to hit the turf with an apparent injury throughout the course of the season. It’s certainly something the rules committee needs to consider in the offseason.
