In mid-December, Purdue sat with a 6-5 record, had a stretch of losing three of four games and lost credibility as a quality team in the B1G. It’s funny how things can quickly change in college basketball.

Two months later, the Boilermakers are 18-7 on the year with an 11-3 mark in the conference, just a half-game out of first place. On Saturday, they posted their ninth win in 10 games, defeating Penn State 76-64 at Mackey Arena.

Purdue, without question, has been one of the hottest teams in the B1G and in all of college basketball.

After Saturday’s victory over the Nittany Lions, head coach Matt Painter was asked whether or not he believed his team has overachieved this season, considering that 6-5 start and losing four seniors from a season ago. His response has gone viral:

Carsen Edwards aside, Purdue doesn’t have a team full of All-B1G talent, but several pieces that help complete the puzzle. It’s a huge reason why the Boilers are still in the thick of the conference race with six games remaining.

Painter has blossomed into one of the best coaches in the league. His latest post-game presser shows exactly why his teams are so competitive every year.
