It’s a game that Chris Ash likely won’t ever forget. In 2016, a top five Michigan team waltzed into High Point Solutions Stadium, dropped 78 points on Rutgers and picked up one of the most lopsided wins in program history.

Two years later, with the Wolverines headed back to Piscataway this weekend, Ash was asked about that 78-0 thumping. The wound still seems pretty fresh.

“I don’t think they did anything out of line,” Ash said during his Monday press conference. “You know, our job is to stop somebody and that’s what we’ve got to do. You guys can go back and reflect and look at what’s happened in the past last time they were here. It is what it is. You know, nobody did anything out of line. It’s our job to play better, and that’s what we need to do this Saturday.”

Michigan’s 78 points in that game doubled the amount of yardage Rutgers totaled (39). The Scarlet Knights were also held to just two first downs in that game.

While some accused the Wolverines of running up the score, Ash has never approached the situation that way and has repeatedly said Rutgers needed to get stops if it didn’t want to give up such a high point total.

Rutgers is faced with battling another talented Michigan team this year, one that held Michigan State’s offense to just 94 total yards a few weeks ago. Considering the struggles the Knights have had on both sides of the ball, things could get ugly again.

Michigan enters Saturday’s game with an 8-1 record and is undefeated in B1G play. Rutgers is 1-8 and winless in the conference.
