Rutgers may have its starting quarterback by the end of the week, according to head coach Chris Ash.

During the Scarlet Knights’ annual Media Day press conference, Ash was asked about plenty of different topics as the 2017 season inches closer. But one of the first things addressed was the quarterback position.

“We’re getting closer to naming a starter,” Ash said, according to NJ.com. “We’ve got three weeks to go before we play, and we’d like to do it sooner than later. We’ll probably get through this week, keep sorting it out a little bit, and then get ready by the end of this week, first of next week, to go ahead and name a starting quarterback.”

Ash said that the quarterback position has been on of the most improved areas from last season. that’s hugely important fro Rutgers heading into the season, as the Scarlet Knights ranked last in the B1G in passing offense (138.3 yards per game), and completion percentage (47.9 percent) last year.

Giovanni Rescigno, grad-transfer Kyle Bolin and freshman Jonathon Lewis are all in the hunt for the starting job. Rescigno was the top passer for the Scarlet Knights last fall, splitting time with Chris Laviano.

He completed 86-of-163 passes while throwing for 889 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions. Rescigno appeared in seven games.

Though Ash is confident that he’ll have his starting QB named at the end of the week, he said that none of the three candidates have really separated themselves just yet.

“I can’t say that either one of them has separated themselves,” Ash said. “It just goes by day. You know, one day one (QB) looks like they have separated and the next day it’s someone else.

“So this week we’ve really got to find out who is going to be the most consistent and most dependable. All three of those guys, they have strengths, they have weaknesses, they have good days and they have bad days. Right now they are all three probably putting together more good days than they are bad days.”
