Earlier Tuesday, two Rutgers defensive backs were suspended for their involvement in a paintball incident.

Now, we’re learning more about what happened.

University police said 3 students were hit by paintballs from a vehicle driving by around 10 p.m. Monday night. Rutgers defensive backs Max Melton and Chris Long were both charged with 3 counts of aggravated assault and a weapons count, and coach Greg Schiano suspended both of them Tuesday.

The victims refused medical attention at the scene, according to the Associated Press.

“I was informed that Chis Long and Malachi Melton were taken into police custody early this morning as a result of an incident involving a paint ball gun,” Schiano said. “Both players have been suspended immediately.”

Melton has started all three games at cornerback for Rutgers this season and has 2 interceptions, including a 46-yard pick-six against Temple in Week 1. He also has a fumble recovery and a blocked punt. Long has played in all three games this season on the special teams.

Neither player will play in Rutgers’ game against No. 19 Michigan this week.
