Former Rutgers head coach rumored to be a candidate to join Urban Meyer's staff in Jacksonville
With Urban Meyer reportedly closing in on a deal to become the next coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, there’s a strong possibility a former Rutgers head coach would be joining the staff.
Chris Ash is being targeted as a candidate to become the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator, according to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, via 247Sports. Ash was most recently Texas’ defensive coordinator last season and previously was a defensive coordinator at Ohio State under Meyer. Ash has also been a defensive coordinator at Wisconsin (2011-12) and Arkansas (2013).
There’s also reports from 247Sports that Ash is receiving interest by Florida coach Dan Mullen for spot on his staff. Ash was the head coach at Rutgers from 2016-19, where he amassed an 8-33 record.
Meyer has captured three national championships (2 with Florida, 1 with Ohio State) and has posted a 187-32 record as a college football head coach. Meyer stepped away from coaching in 2018 because of health reasons and has served as a broadcaster for FOX and the Big Ten Network during his retirement.
