A couple weeks ago, Rutgers fired its head coach, Chris Ash. The Scarlet Knights weren’t appearing to be making any progress under Ash, who was in his fourth season.

For now, Nunzio Campanile — the team’s tight ends coach — has been anointed as the interim coach. However, Rutgers still needs an official man to lead the program for the future.

On Thursday night, the New England Patriots defeated the New York Giants 35-14. After the game, former Rutgers players — and now Patriots — Devin and Jason McCourty talked about what Rutgers should do going forward:

“I heard they’re doing anything and everything opposite of Greg (Schiano),” Jason McCourty told NJ Advance Media. “Which is kind of funny, because he’s the guy who’s had the most success there. To dismiss it so fast is just like, well, it should at least be a thought.”

Devin McCourty — Jason’s identical brother — made his message short, but to the point:

“They need to offer Schiano all the money they got.”

This thinking is certainly understandable. In the last five years, Rutgers owns a 12-41 record. Under Schiano, throw his first four years out. That’s what it took him to get the program where he knew it could go.

From 2005-11, under Schiano, the Scarlet Knights went 56-33. The McCourty knows what Rutgers can do with the right head coach. And, we all do.

It’s just been a while.

Maybe in order to reboot the program, it would take Schiano a second go in Piscataway.
