Rutgers went out with a whimper Tuesday evening, losing to Hofstra in the first round of the NIT, 88-86 in overtime. The Scarlet Knights were the 2nd team out from the Field of 68 in the NCAA Tournament, just behind Oklahoma State.

Rutgers has officially lost 7 of its last 10 as their season comes to a close. Hofstra’s Tyler Thomas sent the Scarlet Knights home with a dagger jumper with 10 seconds remaining.

Things started well for Rutgers this season, too. The Scarlet Knights started the year 16-7, looking like a safe bet to reach the tournament. Instead, they lost an efficient scorer in Mawot Mag to a knee injury and spiraled out of control, dropping 6 of their last 8 regular season games. For that reason, they were forced out of the field in favor of Nevada.
