Rutgers is dealing with at least 1 notable absence on offense and could be without a star player for Sunday’s season opener against Northwestern.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that star running back Samuel Brown is considered questionable with a foot injury. In the running back room, the Scarlet Knights are already set to be without Aaron Young.

Brown is coming off a 2022 season in which he rushed 86 times for 374 yards and 3 touchdowns in 7 games. The Philadelphia native was a Class of 2022 prospect with 21 scholarship offers, ranked No. 374 overall on the 247Sports Composite.

Young is entering his 5th college football season. He has played in 38 games over his Rutgers career. Last season, Young participated in just 4 games. He rushed 11 times for 38 yards. Young’s most productive season came in 2021, when he logged 56 carries for 205 yards and 5 touchdowns.

The Scarlet Knights are entering the 4th season of Greg Schiano’s second stint with the program. Rutgers is looking for its first winning season since 2014 when Kyle Flood’s team went 8-5.

Sunday’s game is set for noon ET, airing on CBS.
