Greg Schiano continues to piece together his first recruiting class in his return to Rutgers. On Wednesday, the Scarlet Knights’ 2020 class received another verbal pledge.

Three-star cornerback Malachi “Max” Melton, younger brother of Rutgers receiver Bo Melton, has flipped his commitment from Purdue to Rutgers. He made his announcement via Twitter on Wednesday, just one week ahead of the Early Signing Period.

“Thanking God for every blessing he has given me,” Melton wrote. “I will be representing my home state!”

Melton is a 5-foot-11, 150-pound cornerback from Egg Harbor City, New Jersey. He had previously committed to Purdue in July 2019, but has flipped his decision since Rutgers hired Schiano.

According to 247Sports, he’s ranked as the No. 75 cornerback in the 2020 class and ranks 23rd among recruits out of New Jersey during this cycle.

In addition to Purdue and Rutgers, Melton also received offers from Boston College, Temple and UMass.

Rutgers is coming off a 2-10 season, but now has new leadership. Schiano had tremendous success during his first run with the Scarlet Knights in the 2000s and is hoping to return the program to where it once was.

Rutgers now has 11 players committed in the 2020 class. The Scarlet Knights still rank last in the B1G and 85th nationally.
