Chris Ash went the NFL route to fill a vacancy on his staff.

Adam Rittenberg of ESPN reported Friday morning that Rutgers is hiring Jay Valai as the new cornerbacks coach. He spent last season with the Kansas City Chiefs as a defensive quality control coach.

Before joining the Chiefs staff, Valai spent two years at Georgia (2016-17) as a defensive quality control coach.

Valai was a former safety at Wisconsin and was coached by Ash in 2010 in Madison. At the time, Ash was the defensive backs coach for the Badgers.

Rutgers was looking for a new cornerbacks coach after Henry Baker, who departed for a role with the New York Giants. Baker had been hired after the 2018 season but quickly left when the NFL opportunity became available.

Rutgers finished the 2018 season 1-11.
