Rumors were swirling for quite some time about Greg Schiano making his way back to Piscataway to be the man in charge of the Rutgers football program.

It finally happened and contract details have been reported as of Sunday morning.

Schiano is indeed back and the Scarlet Knights program — and fan-base — is likely ecstatic about it. There was even a fund set up on Twitter pleading for Schiano’s return.

Well, here it is. He’s back. And we’re excited to see what Rutgers football looks like from 2020 and beyond in the Big Ten.

Later in the day on Sunday, Rutgers athletic director Pat Hobbs made a statement announcing Schiano being back with the Scarlet Knights:

“The next great chapter for Rutgers Football is about to begin. There are many people to thank for where we are today, particularly Coach Schiano and his team, as well as everyone here at Rutgers. They all played important roles in bringing these complex negotiations to a close.

“It wouldn’t be appropriate to prejudge any action that the Board of Governors may take, but I believe today that Rutgers Football is on the path to greatness.”

Again, Rutgers has got to be happy right now. Schiano, from 2001-11, put together a 68-67 record while leading Rutgers. More impressively, from 2005-11, he got the program rolling.

His teams went 56-33 during that stretch and made bowl games in six of those seven seasons. The best finish came in 2006 when his Scarlet Knights went 11-2 overall.
