Steve Pikiell’s Rutgers squad will be replacing a key starter. Point guard Paul Mulcahy announced Friday that he is entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Mulcahy made the announcement on social media, tweeting a heartfelt goodbye to the Rutgers community, looking back fondly on 4 seasons with the Scarlet Knights.

“Dear Rutgers,

“In 2018, a kid from Bayonne committed with goals to turn around a basketball program, elevate a University, impact the community, and earn a college degree.

“I love Rutgers University, the entire community, and all who make up the Basketball program. I have taken much pride in representing my home state of New Jersey.

“As a Rutgers Alumnus, I am proud to be a Scarlet Knight for life and am GRATEFUL4 for everything we have accomplished together over the last last four years on and off the court.

“With my final year of eligibility, I will be entering the transfer portal.

“I want to thank Coach Pikiell for believing in me and each individual on campus who has positively impacted my experience.

“Being New Jersey’s Point Guard has been something I’ve taken great pride in. For my final assist after 457 on the court in New Brunswick, I am donating 457 meals to Elijah’s Promise in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

“With love, gratitude, and appreciation,
Paul Mulcahy”

In 2019-20, Mulcahy made 31 appearances off the bench. The past 3 seasons, he has been a regular starter. Mulcahy played in 121 games for the Scarlet Knights, starting 81 times.

Mulcahy’s most productive season came in 2021-22 when he started all 32 games, averaging 9 points over 32 minutes per game. This past season, Mulcahy made 30 appearances (28 starts), logging 8.3 points and 4.9 assists per game over 32.4 minutes.

With his B1G starting experience, Mulcahy could be a sought-after transfer.
