Labor Day weekend is one last breath of summer for many New Jersey natives. It marks the final chance to get away for an extended weekend and visited the Shore.

But before people start flocking towards the sandy beaches, Rutgers has a plan to bring the Shore to Piscataway. The athletic department has coined the Scarlet Knights’ season opener against Washington as the “War Before the Shore.”

It was actually announced a few weeks ago that Rutgers athletic director Pat Hobbs wanted do something special for the team’s home opener. Those plans have been finalized.

High Point Solutions Stadium will house several boats behind the end zone, while carnival games, Jersey-themed food trucks and band performances will take place outside the stadium, giving Piscataway that Jersey Shore feel.

“We are excited to kick off the start of college football in a big way,” said Rick Thorpe, Senior Associate AD for External Affairs and Strategic Communications, according to the Rutgers athletic website. “From hosting a showdown with a top-10, Pac-12 power in front of a nationally-televised audience, coupled with enjoying all of the shore-themed promotions that we have planned for the entire gameday, and you have a fantastic way to start off the long holiday weekend. Everyone from across the entire state is invited to come out to enjoy the action and cheer on your Scarlet Knights.”

The first 5,000 students will also receive a special themed beach towel and there will be a student giveaway for a free shirt.

Rutgers hosts Washington on Friday, Sept. 1, with a kickoff time of 8 p.m. The game will be aired on Fox Sports 1.
