Rutgers had its opportunities but couldn’t pull through in the closing moments of Wednesday night’s First Four matchup against Notre Dame.

Despite big shots from Ron Harper Jr. and Geo Baker and a career performance from Caleb McConnell, Rutgers fell 89-87 to Notre Dame in Dayton. Fittingly for the Fighting Irish, the game-winning basket was scored on St. Patrick’s Day.

With 23 seconds remaining in the second overtime and trailing 87-84, Harper drilled a long 3-point shot to tie the game and potentially send it to a third overtime. Rutgers appeared to get the stop it needed when Blake Wesley missed a layup but an offensive putback from Paul Atkinson Jr. proved to be the difference in the game.

Rutgers did not get the half-court heave off in time, leading to a Notre Dame victory. The Fighting Irish will now play No. 6 seed Alabama in the Round of 64.

McConnell had a career night for the Scarlet Knights, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the loss. Harper and Baker were also sensational, scoring 22 and 19, respectively. Cliff Omoruyi ended the night with 15.

The biggest issue for the Scarlet Knights on Wednesday? The bench. While they haven’t relied on the reserves heavily throughout the year, they got no bench scoring in a 50-minute contest in Dayton.

Rutgers’ season comes to an end with an 18-14 record overall. The Scarlet Knights finished in the Top 4 of the B1G with a 12-8 record.
