Greg Schiano has added another big-time recruit to Rutgers’ 2022 class.

Friday, Rutgers received a verbal commitment from 4-star dual-threat quarterback and Top 100 overall prospect Gavin Wimsatt, a native of Owensboro, Kentucky. The Scarlet Knights beat out Louisville, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Oregon, West Virginia and Cincinnati for his pledge.

Ranked No. 89 overall in the 2022 recruiting class, Wimsatt is currently the highest-rate prospect to commit to Rutgers. He’s also the fourth 4-star pledge and the 11th player in the class to commit to Schiano and his staff.

Wimsatt made his announcement with a video on Twitter:

Wimsatt posted and impressive stat line during his junior season at the high school level. He threw for 2,349 yards and 27 touchdowns while also rushing for 443 yards and 6 touchdowns.

In two seasons as a starting quarterback, Wimsatt has thrown for more than 5,000 yards, rushed for 1,000 more and accounted for 76 total touchdowns.

From 247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks:

Generates a lot of torque and subsequent arm strength when throwing on the run, especially throwing across his body when rolling left. Displays good awareness in the pocket and has an instinctive play style that allows for big-play ability in off-schedule situations. Places the ball well on downfield throws outside the numbers. Arm strength does not look to be an issue. Size and athleticism allow for good over-the-middle velocity when required. Strong but not elite production through sophomore and junior seasons. Accuracy and consistency can improve, as evidenced by 57 completion percentage over 2019-2020 seasons.

Wimsatt is a three-sport athlete at the high school level, also participating in basketball and baseball. He brings tremendous athleticism to Piscataway and the kind of talent needed to win in the B1G.

Per 247Sports’ recruiting rankings, Wimsatt ranks as the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the 2022 class. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound passer is also the top prospect out of Kentucky.

With Wimsatt’s pledge, Rutgers ranks No. 6 nationally in the 2022 recruiting rankings and No. 2 in the B1G, behind only Ohio State.
