Rutgers’ basketball team may have to continue on without its team captain, leading scorer and rebounder next season.

On Wednesday morning, Rutgers star Eugene Omoruyi announced through his Instagram account that he plans to leave the Scarlet Knights and pursue opportunities elsewhere. His departure would be a significant blow for a program that was making strides to becoming a more competitive B1G team.

“I would first like to thank Rutgers University for the good memories that I had over the past 3 years,” Omoruyi wrote on Instagram. “I’d like to thank the coaching staff for allowing me to grow as a young man on and off the court. In addition, I would like to thank my teammates for accepting who I am and always having my back. We built great memories and relationships that will last forever.

“Rutgers will always be a special place for me. But with that being said, I have decided to transfer, and have asked Coach (Pikiell) and the coaching staff for my release from the program. Thank You.”

Omoruyi averaged 13.8 points and 7.2 rebounds a year ago for the Scarlet Knights and registered six double-doubles on the year. He made no mention of a potential landing spot.
