Rutgers outlasts Washington, improves to 4-0 for first time since 2012
Rutgers defeated Washington 21-18 on Friday night to move to 4-0 on the season.
It’s the first time the Scarlet Knights have been 4-0 to start a campaign since 2012. That was the first year of the Kyle Flood era after Greg Schiano left to become the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Rutgers led for almost the entire game, but it wasn’t without drama. Washington had a 55-yard field goal attempt at the horn that would have sent the game to overtime. But the kick went wide left, giving Rutgers the win:

Washington out-gained 521-299 and didn’t turn the ball over, but still lost the game in the end. Despite only scoring 18 points, it was a good night offensively for the Huskies. They averaged 7.9 yards per play and reached the red zone 4 times.
However, Washington settled for a 22-yard field goal in the first quarter and had 2 other field goal misses — in addition to the one at the end of the game.
Third down was a massive problem for the Huskies in this game as they went just 2-for-12 in those situations. They also went just 2-for-4 on 4th down.
Kyle Monangai continued his strong start to the season by rushing for 132 yards and 1 touchdown in the win.
Rutgers will take its undefeated record on the road next weekend at Nebraska. Washington will try to get back on track in Week 6 against Michigan at home.
