Honesty is the best policy.

At least, that’s what we’re told.

Great fans are also fans that are realistic. No, the Cleveland Browns aren’t going to win the Super Bowl this season. That’s OK.

And, no, Rutgers isn’t going to win out from here, go to a Rose Bowl and smash a Pac-12 school. It’s just not going to happen. But again, it’s OK.

One Rutgers student was talking with James Kratch of NJ.com and said, “We suck, but it’s still fun to go to the games.”

Now, that’s the spirit.

Seriously, though, football games are fun. Even if your team loses, the ability to go outside and enjoy a game with some friends is at least something to do.

“I want to support the school,” said Ashley, a student who only gave her first name. “There’s always the off chance they’ll have a good game, so we want to see it if they do.”

“That’s a good question,” one student who didn’t give her name said when asked why she was there when so many of her classmates weren’t.

Here’s another optimistic look from a student:

“I bought the season tickets,” another student added. “If they win, I don’t want to miss it.”

This is true. If or when Rutgers does win another game, you have to see it happen if you’re a Scarlet Knights student, right? Especially when you bought season tickets to begin with — then it almost seems mandatory.

Rutgers to this point is 1-4 on the season and hosts Illinois Saturday. The game can be watched on BTN, and at halftime, Illinois leads 24-14.

There’s always the second half.
