Rutgers tabs true freshman as starting QB vs. Texas State
Rutgers will start the 2018 season with a new face under center.
Friday afternoon, the Scarlet Knights announced that true freshman Artur Sitkowski will be the starter for the opening week clash against Texas State. He’ll be the first true freshman to start in a Week 1 contest since Ryan Cubit in 2001.
The last true freshman to start in any game for Rutgers was Gary Nova in 2011.
Sitkowski is a former 3-star prospect out of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He chose Rutgers over offers from Miami, Boston College, Duke and Florida. One of his former teammates, Zack Annexstad, was named the starter at Minnesota earlier this week.
Rutgers is coming off a 4-8 season in which it won three B1G games. The Scarlet Knights have been through a number of quarterbacks in the Chris Ash era, though, unable to find much stability at the position.
The Scarlet Knights are hoping Sitkowski can finally be the guy to get the offense on track.
Rutgers opens the season on Sept. 1 against Texas State at High Point Solution Stadium.
