Rutgers without 2 starters against Virginia Tech for Week 3, per report
Rutgers will look to improve to 3-0 on the season as it hosts Virginia Tech on Saturday for a non-conference Week 3 matchup. But Greg Schiano’s team will reportedly be missing a pair of starters against the Hokies.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, wide receiver Chris Long and right tackle Tyler Needham won’t play on Saturday. Long has been reported as having a “lower-body injury” while Needham injured his knee during Week 2’s win against Temple.
Originally a defensive back, Long made the switch to wide receiver in 2022, making 15 catches for 200 yards and a touchdown. He has 2 catches for 28 yards thus far in 2023.
Needham, a junior, played in 6 games in 2022 and had started at right tackle for the Scarlet Knights’ initial games against Northwestern and Temple. He exited in the 2nd quarter against the Owls after what Schiano called a “bad, bad deal” injury-wise.
Meanwhile, the Hokies enter the game at 1-1. They opened their season with a win over Old Dominion before falling to Purdue.
Kickoff from Piscataway is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
