Bronny James will get his chance to work out for NBA teams at the NBA Draft Combine later this month. However, it’s unclear what his ultimate future will be after a rocky season at USC.

Friday evening, the NBA confirmed James is among the 78 overall players invited to the combine which is set to take place May 12-19 in Chicago. James has declared for the 2024 NBA Draft while maintaining his eligibility, and he was not among the top 10 players invited to the combine per a vote from the NBA teams on the players invited.

What does James’ future hold?

Coming out of high school, James was a 5-star recruit and the No. 22 player in the country per the 247 Sports Composite. One assumption was that James would play one season at USC before entering the NBA Draft where it was likely LeBron James would try to unite with his son as the first father-son duo to play on the same team.

Now, it’s unclear whether or not Bronny is best suited to enter the NBA now, and that’s not just because LeBron provided some cryptic answers on his future plans after the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs.

Bronny’s first season with the Trojans did not go smoothly with a medical emergency interrupting his early days on campus. Once cleared, James’ performance on the court did not live up to expectations with the freshman averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 36.6% (26.7% from 3-point range).

ESPN’s Jay Bilas reacted to the recent news of James pursuing the NBA Draft but feels it is remarkable that he is still playing at all after his health scare. Bilas still feels James is a future NBA prospect with a bright future, but he also questions if now is the right time for that NBA career to begin.

Meanwhile, NBA insider Shams Charania recently reported the Lakers are wholeheartedly expected to do everything possible to get LeBron back in LA. Along with that, the Lakers have an interest in taking Bronny in the draft.

If Bronny does remain in the draft, Los Angeles will certainly be a team to watch with the 17th overall pick. Though he did not have the kind of season that would warrant that high of a pick, it’s possible the Lakers do what they need to in order to pair LeBron and Bronny together next season.
