D’Anton Lynn has agreed to a contract extension to stay as defensive coordinator at USC, according to a report.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel was first to share that news on Thursday night:

The 35-year-old Lynn has been highly sought after by other schools, including his alma mater Penn State, but he’s apparently decided to stay in Los Angeles instead of leaving USC after just 1 season.

Penn State, where Lynn played cornerback, has an opening at defensive coordinator after Tom Allen left to run the defense at Clemson.

Lynn, a Texas native, has spent the past 2 seasons on the West Coast. He was the defensive coordinator at UCLA in 2023 before heading down the road to coach the defense at USC. Before he jumped to the collegiate coaching ranks, Lynn spent 9 seasons as an NFL assistant with the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens.

USC hired Lynn to run its defense in 2024 after struggling mightily the season before. The Trojans were still a work in progress defensively this past season as they finished with a 7-6 record. USC ranked 98th in pass defense and 53rd against the run in 2024, so there is still plenty of work to be done, and Lynn will reportedly be staying put to get the Trojans defense back to elite status.
