Lincoln Riley addresses preparing for 'unique' OC change by Nebraska
Lincoln Riley is known for his Air Raid ties and will be facing another Air Raid coach in new Nebraska Cornhuskers offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen up next on the schedule. Holgorsen formerly served as the head coach at Houston and West Virginia.
Riley recently spoke to the media about the task he is going up against in that situation, terming it as “unique.” That’s a reference to the timing of Nebraska’s OC change with Holgorsen just recently coming on board.
Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule opened the season with Marcus Satterfield as his OC, but the offense has regressed throughout the middle portion of the season. Holgorsen was brought on as an analyst during Nebraska’s bye week before Rhule announced he would finish the season as the OC to start this week.
“I don’t know if I want to speculate because, you know, you’re not there and don’t know the entire situation,” Riley said. “Your first thought is not, obviously, I don’t think it’s going to be an erratically new system. I’m sure there’s going to be some things different from why they made the change to begin with. It’s obviously a unique change and timing with somebody who wasn’t on staff there.”
Of course, Riley and Holgorsen already have some personal ties. It is far from the first time they have gone up against each other, and there is a mutual respect that exists there.
“But obviously, we’re really close and we’ve known each other for a long time. A lot of hours, a lot of great memories together and in the last several years, we’ve ended up coaching against each other quite a bit,” Riley explained. “So, if coach Rhule was going to do this with anybody, he’s obviously one of the first guys you would think about.”
Nebraska and USC are set to kick off at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT) in the LA Memorial Coliseum.
