Lincoln Riley had to do a hard thing this week with his team’s season spiraling downward, so the USC head coach made the switch from Miller Moss to Jayden Maiava at quarterback during the Trojans’ bye week.

When USC returns to the field in 10 days, it will face Nebraska with a new quarterback in place, for now at least. Riley was even complimentary of Moss after confirming the switch during Tuesday’s press conference, telling reporters how hard he’s worked and how dedicated he’s been this season even as the Trojans have gone from a 3-1 start to a 4-5 record.

Riley had a message for Moss going forward, too:

“He’s just got to be ready for the next opportunity. We never know how that’s going to play out,” said Riley. “I’ve had these play out where something like this happens and a guy goes to another school, and he ends up playing in the NFL. I’ve had these happen where a guy sat down, didn’t play for a little bit, went back in and played even better, took it over and ran off from there.”

Riley wanted Moss to keep an open mind and stay positive:

“Anything can happen. It’s football,” Riley said. “The tough thing is you don’t know exactly what is going to happen, but if I know Miller, he’ll stay in a really positive mindset, he’ll come and go to work for this team and he’ll be ready for his next opportunity, no matter where it is. And we’re going to push and coach him to help him get to that.”
