USC honored a pair of Heisman Trophy winners on Thursday with banners inside the L.A. Coliseum. The school also announced that it is officially retiring quarterback Caleb Williams’ No. 13 jersey — a tradition for Heisman winners that come through the program.

Williams and Reggie Bush will both see their commemorative Heisman banners added to the east endzone for Saturday’s home opener against Utah State. For Bush, it’s a return to glory, officially closing the book on a saga that saw him removed from campus entirely for years before having his 2005 Heisman re-instated by the Heisman Trust back in April.

Williams, who captured the 2022 Heisman Trophy after leading the Trojans to an 11-3 record and a berth in the Pac-12 Championship Game, was the No. 1 pick by the Chicago Bears in the NFL Draft earlier this summer. With his season set to get underway on Sunday, it’s unclear if Williams will be able to return to Los Angeles for any kind of on-field recognition. The Bears’ bye week falls on a week when USC plays at Maryland.

Williams will become the eighth Heisman winner in school history to have his number retired, joining Carson Palmer (No. 3), Bush (5), Matt Leinart (11), Charles White (12), Mike Garrett (20), OJ Simpson (32), and Marcus Allen (33).

As for Bush, the stated plan is for him to come back this season and lead the team out of the tunnel before a game.

That’s going to happen,” Bush said recently on a podcast interview. “That’s going to happen at some point, 100%. I’m getting chills right now just thinking about it because it’s something I thought about for a very long time. It’s something that’s been on my mind for a very long time.

“I’ve had visions of what I think it’s going to look like and feel like with my kids and my wife being there with me, all those things. I can’t wait for that day to come, and it is going to happen. Just don’t have a date yet.”

USC has home games this season against Utah State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Rutgers, Nebraska, and Notre Dame. And it is off to a hot start after upsetting then-No. 13 LSU in Las Vegas in Week 1.
