USC pulled off a road upset on Saturday, defeating No. 13 Illinois 82-72. It was the Trojans’ first road win over a ranked team since 2010.

Desmond Claude led the way for the Trojans as he scored 31 points on 12-for-20 shooting from the floor despite 5 turnovers, including a 7-for-7 clip from the free throw line. Wesley Yates III (15) and Rashaun Agee (13) also reached double digits for the Trojans, with Agee and Saint Thomas tying a game-high with 8 rebounds.

USC led by as many as 9— 25-16 — with just under 7-and-a-half minutes to go in the first half before Illinois finished the frame on a 22-10 run to take a 38-35 lead into the locker room. But the Trojans pulled back ahead, 46-43, near the 4-minute mark of the 2nd.

The game would remain close throughout the period as the Illini’s Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn tied it at 57 with 8:46 remaining, but a 13-3 run saw the Trojans take a 70-60 lead with 5:18 left. The Illini would get no closer than 7 as they dropped to 12-4 and 4-2 in the Big Ten. USC improved to 10-6 and 2-3 in league play.

It’s the biggest win of the brief Eric Musselman era, with the former Nevada and Arkansas head coach coming out west to take the reins of the Trojans program after Andy Enfield departed for SMU.
