Say what you want about the preseason not mattering for solidified NFL players.

For guys just trying to earn a roster spot, the preseason is everything. And as Alex Erickson reminded us, there are still some pretty awesome journeys that come with that.

The former Wisconsin receiver and undrafted free agent delivered one of the more memorable preseason performances of the opening week. Not only did Erickson find the end zone as a receiver, he also returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown.

And it was incredible:

That’s some freakish stuff for any rookie, much less one who went undrafted. Erickson actually never returned a punt or a kick for a touchdown at Wisconsin. He only switched to that role his senior season.

Naturally, Erickson was the star of the show after the game. He did score the Bengals’ only two touchdowns. Media members were eager to learn more about the rookie wideout:

Hopefully for Erickson, his “big time” game will land him a spot on the Bengals’ opening day roster. He certainly made himself an overnight fan favorite in Cincinnati.
