Former Wisconsin basketball player announces cancer diagnosis
Former Wisconsin basketball player Walt McGrory has announced he’s been diagnosed with cancer.
McGrory said in a statement on Friday afternoon that he has osteosarcoma, which is a form of bone cancer. Here’s the announcement, which comes from South Dakota head coach Todd Lee.
It’s heartbreaking to hear the news about Walt. We know the impact Coyote Nation can have when a member of the Coyote family goes through something like this. We stand behind Walt in every step moving forward. pic.twitter.com/f7w66qxD4z

“I have a new battle to fight and will no longer be able to compete this season,” McGrory wrote in-part. “I was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma. A form of bone cancer. I will learn more about my prognosis and course of treatment in the coming days. It will be a long road. But I know I’m not in this alone. Thank you to everyone who has reached out to lend support and offer strength.”
McGrory transferred to South Dakota earlier this offseason after a four-year stint with the Badgers as a walk-on. He played in one game during the 2020-21 campaign.
In total, he appeared in 37 games for the Badgers and scored 26 career points. He also contributed 19 rebounds, 10 assists and 5 steals.
McGrory attended Edina High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
