Graham Mertz was a three-year starter for Wisconsin under former head coach Paul Chryst. Now, Mertz is in the transfer portal and reportedly landing on a new destination.

Mertz originally joined the Badgers as a 4-star prospect and top-75 recruit nationally in the 2019 recruiting class. After redshirting as a freshman, Mertz stepped into the starting role for the 2020 season.

Unfortunately, the Badgers struggled to maintain overall success with Mertz struggling with inconsistency as a starter. He threw for 38 touchdowns across the 2020-22 seasons but also tossed 26 interceptions.

After Jim Leonhard was not retained as the permanent head coach, Mertz officially hit the portal following the hiring of Luke Fickell by the Badgers. According to G. Allan Taylor with The Athletic, Mertz has also landed on an SEC transfer destination.

According to Taylor, Mertz will head to Florida to team up with Billy Napier for the 2023 season. Napier is losing his 2022 starting QB with Anthony Richardson heading to the NFL Draft.

Following a blowout bowl loss and a 6-7 record in his first season with the Gators, Napier is facing pressure to get things straightened out in Gainesville. We’ll see if Mertz can play a role in that turnaround moving forward.
