It’s one of the biggest storylines for Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame this weekend: Jack Coan vs. Graham Mertz.

Coan was in line to be the starter for the Badgers in 2020, but broke his foot in training camp, which opened the door for Mertz to start as a freshman. Mertz lit it up immediately, completing 20 of 21 passes for 248 yards and 5 touchdowns in the season opener against Illinois. Coan, meanwhile, didn’t play at all and transferred to Notre Dame in January.

Now, the duo will face each other this weekend. They’re having two statistically different seasons, though.

Through 2 games this year, Mertz has completed 36 of 54 passes for 326 touchdowns and no touchdowns. Coan, meanwhile, has thrown for 828 yards on 62-of-99 passing and 8 touchdowns in 3 games for the Fighting Irish. Coan also has the edge in yards per attempt with 8.4 compared to Mertz’s 6.0 yards per attempt.

Either way, it should be fun to watch them go back-and-forth this weekend. Kickoff is at 11 a.m. CT on FOX.
