Jim Leonhard got choked up addressing his team after Wisconsin defeated Nebraska and became bowl-eligible this season.

It’s been a rocky season for the Badgers, and for Leonhard, who has uncertainty surrounding his interim status at the school. Leonhard became the Badgers DC in 2017, replacing Justin Wilcox, who moved on to serve as the head coach at California.

Following the firing of head coach Paul Chryst in October, Leonhard took over as interim head coach. Leonhard will have a winning record in the regular season as an interim head coach, having led Wisconsin to a 4-2 record under his direction.

After Wisconsin rallied from a 14-3 4th quarter deficit to upend Nebraska with a 15-14 win, Leonhard had a moment to express pride in his team.

“We needed this one for a lot of reasons, for the program, for you guys, everything you’ve been through, for Devin [Chandler], proud of you man,” said Leonhard. “We stuck together. It wasn’t pretty, we knew it wasn’t goig to be easy, you stuck together. It’s a big time win for this program, man, the way we bounced back. I’m proud of you guys.”

Wisconsin will face Minnesota next Saturday before heading to a bowl game in the postseason.
