Wisconsin received some really tough news on Thursday morning. Senior linebacker Jack Cichy will miss the entire 2017 campaign.

The University of Wisconsin’s athletic page, UWBadgers.com, announced that Cichy suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during practice on Tuesday. He was expected to be one of the key leaders for the Badgers defense this fall.

Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst released the following statement on Thursday:

You hate it for Jack. You only get so many chances to play this game and you never want to see a guy miss any of those opportunities. He’s one of the leaders of our team and I know he’ll be a big part of what we do moving forward this season.

Cichy was an All-B1G honorable mention last season, despite missing the final seven games of the season due to injury. He tallied 60 tackles, seven stops for loss and 1.5 sacks.

The linebacker is a former walk-on who has appeared in 24 games and made 11 starts during his career with the Badgers. He was voted a team captain for the 2017 season.

Cichy was a starter at linebacker in 2016 before suffering the season-ending injury against Iowa. In his career, he’s recorded 120 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.

This is a really tough break for the Badgers and Cichy, who was expected to be one of the top linebackers in conference this fall.
