There’s another Chryst coaching in college football.

Late Monday night, Cal officially announced the hiring of Geep Chryst, the older brother of Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst. Geep will be the tight ends coach for the Bears, joining the staff of Justin Wilcox.

Wilcox spent one season on Paul’s Wisconsin staff, serving as the defensive coordinator for the Badgers in 2016. He was then hired to take over at Cal for the 2017 season. He is 21-21 with the Bears in four seasons and has taken his teams to a pair of bowl games.

Geep has spent most of his coaching career in the NFL. The last time he was on a college sideline was in 1990, when he was the quarterbacks coach at Wyoming. He was most recently the tight ends coach with the Denver Broncos, a job he had from 2017-18.

Before that, Geep spent five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, starting out as the quarterbacks coach (2011-14) and being promoted to offensive coordinator (2015) for one year.

Other stops for Geep include the Carolina Panthers (2006-10), Arizona Cardinals (1996-98, 2001-03), San Diego Chargers (1999-2000) and Chicago Bears (1991-95).

Cal played just four games during the 2020 season and finished with a 1-3 record.
