With less than a week until kickoff, Wisconsin finally has named a starting quarterback.

Jack Coan will be the No. 1 guy for the Badgers to start the year, with the official announcement coming on Sunday afternoon. Coan was in a battle with true freshman and former four-star recruit Graham Mertz for the job.

Coan replaces Alex Hornibrook under center, who was a three-year starter in Madison. He transferred to Florida State last offseason.

Last season, Coan appeared in five games for the Badgers, primarily when Hornibrook was out with a head injury and concussion-like symptoms. Wisconsin was 3-2 in games in which Coan started or saw significant reps, beating Rutgers, Purdue and Miami.

Coan threw for 515 yards and five touchdowns while completing more than 60 percent of his passes. He also accounted for one rushing touchdown.

Mertz is currently listed as the backup option to start the year.

Wisconsin will open the season on Friday, Aug. 30 against USF in Tampa. The Badgers finished the 2018 season with an 8-5 record.
