Paul Chryst hasn’t seen enough from Jack Coan or Graham Mertz to officially name one the starter yet. And he’s doing a good job of staying quiet on the current race between the two.

Friday, Chryst met with the media and was asked about the quarterback situation in Madison. Particularly, the Badgers’ head coach was asked whether or not Mertz had closed the gap on Coan for the No. 1 job.

So far through camp, Coan has seen a good chunk of the first-team snaps.

“I don’t know yet that it’s even to the point where it’s ‘did he close the gap on Jack?” Chryst said. “I don’t know that he’s closed the gap. I don’t even know what the gap was, necessarily.

Chryst says he still hasn’t made a decision, but one will likely come after the team scrimmages on Monday.

“We probably won’t announce anything,” Chryst said.

Mertz arrived in Madison as a coveted four-star quarterback expected to win the starting job when Alex Hornibrook decided to transfer. However, Coan has been impressive early in camp and may put up a much stronger fight than many expected, at least early on.

Whether or not there’s a leader right now isn’t for sure. It sounds like a decision is coming soon, but the public will probably have to wait a lot closer to game day to see whether Mertz or Coan takes the first snap against USF.
