Nothing really went as planned for Wisconsin on Saturday night. The offense was stagnant, the defense got pushed around and it resulted in a 38-13 blowout loss to Michigan.

The Badgers dropped to 4-2 on the season and the hope of keeping a College Football Playoff bid alive came crumbling down. It was a pretty lousy weekend for Wisconsin.

But Paul Chryst isn’t only looking at the negatives from the ugly loss. Despite the underwhelming performance, he believes there were some “great takeaways” his team can build on for the second half of the season.

“Saturday night didn’t go like you’d want it to, but there’s some great takeaways from it. There always is,” Chryst said at his weekly press conference on Monday. “We gotta build on the things we have been doing well. We’re six games in and six to go. Hope to earn the right to play more.”

Despite the loss, Wisconsin is still in good position to win the West Division and make a third straight appearance in the B1G Championship Game. The Badgers are 2-1 in the conference with a  win over Iowa.

The biggest challenge remaining on the schedule for the Badgers is a trip to Penn State on Nov. 10. Games against Northwestern and Purdue could also be tricky, but Wisconsin should be a heavy favorite in both contests.

Perhaps the most troubling thing for the Badgers on Saturday was that they were exposed on both sides of the ball. Alex Hornibrook struggled to find receivers and the offensive line wasn’t getting a good push up front.

Defensively, the Badgers were gashed on the ground.

Chryst says those inconsistencies on Saturday were areas his team can look to improve before tackling the remainder of the season.

“We’ve got to build on the things we’ve been doing well,” Chryst said. “Certainly, each individual and each unit and, therefore, as a team, find the areas we can get better at.”
