The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially decided the battle between a pair of former B1G quarterbacks. Head coach Mike Tomlin announced Wednesday that Russell Wilson will start over Justin Fields this season.

This news comes ahead of the original deadline that Tomlin had put on making the decision, which was set for the end of the week. Clearly, it didn’t take the team long to figure out who they wanted taking the snaps. Both players were given a fair look during the preseason, but Wilson took the lead and held onto it effectively and quickly.

It’s also not a surprise in the final verdict, considering that Wilson played for just one series in the preseason finale and finished the drive out with a touchdown that only further locked up the position. It only took a couple of plays as Wilson went 2-for-2 for 26 yards with the score before he was taken out of the game.

Wilson signed a one-year deal worth $1.2 million with the Steelers as a free agent back in March after he agreed to terms during the NFL’s legal tampering period. Now, he will get a chance to start for the Steelers while Fields slots into the backup role for the season opener.
