Former Wisconsin football player Kraig Appleton has been charged with first-degree murder following a shooting in East St. Louis, Illinois, according to a report.

The Belleville News Democrat reported this week that Appleton has been arrested and charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a 41-year-old woman on April 20. He is currently being held on $1 million bond at the St. Clair County Jail.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for her injuries, but she later died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. No motive was mentioned in the report.

Appleton, now 29, was a member of the Wisconsin football team as a wide receiver during the 2009 season. He appeared in 10 games and caught three passes for 26 yards. As a four-star member of the Badgers recruiting class, he was expected to make significant contributions in the following seasons, but he was suspended for a violation of team rules in February 2010. Appleton then withdrew from the university.
