Wisconsin redshirt freshman quarterback Graham Mertz will miss Wisconsin’s game against Nebraska this weekend after testing positive for COVID-19 over the weekend. The result has been confirmed with a second test and as such Mertz will be out for a total of 21 days per the Big Ten protocol for COVID-19.
Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports reported the news on Tuesday.
Mertz had an impressive debut Friday night when he threw for 248 yards, five touchdowns and just a single incompletion during the Badgers opening weekend 45-7 victory over Illinois.
Along with the required time off the field, according to the coronavirus protocols instituted by the Big Ten he will have to undergo extensive cardiac testing to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on any long-term conditions.
Who will be taking the snaps for the Badgers against Nebraska remains to be a question, as backup Chase Wolf did not practice on Monday, as reported by Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
