Report: Wisconsin emerging as strong candidate to land former Oklahoma starting QB
Wisconsin is reportedly making a strong push to land one of the best players available in the transfer portal.
According to On3’s Gerry Hamilton, former Oklahoma starting quarterback Caleb Williams is strong considering Wisconsin as a destination. USC and LSU are also major contenders to land the versatile QB and former 5-star prospect.
Williams burst onto the college football season when he came in to relieve previous starter Spencer Rattler. In 11 contests with the Sooners as a freshman, Williams threw for 1,912 yards and 21 touchdowns with just 4 interceptions. He also rushed for 442 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Not long after Lincoln Riley accepted the job at USC, Williams decided to enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal. It’s been thought that the quarterback would follow his head coach to Los Angeles, and while that’s still a very real possibility, other contenders have popped up.
Wisconsin has struggled at the quarterback position with Graham Mertz running the show and Williams would be a huge addition for Paul Chryst’s team. While the Badgers managed to post a 9-4 record, they fell short of winning a division title and returning to the B1G Championship Game.
Mertz ended the season throwing for 1,958 yards and 10 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. His completion rate was below 60% on the year.
While USC and LSU might still be the favorites to land Williams, Wisconsin still has a shot to boost its offense quite a bit heading into the 2022 season.
