Sticking around: Wisconsin signs Paul Chryst, Greg Gard to longterm extensions
Wisconsin football coach Paul Chryst and men’s basketball coach Greg Gard both signed longterm extensions with the Badgers on Friday.
Three other coaches at Wisconsin also received significant extensions:
#Badgers contract update:
Paul Chryst extended through Jan 31, 2026
Greg Gard extended through May 31, 2026
Tony Granato extended through June 30, 2026
Mark Johnson extended through June 30, 2026
Chris Bono extended through May 31, 2024— Zach Hanley (@ZachHanley2) April 23, 2021
Chryst has performed well in his six seasons since taking over for Gary Andersen. He’s won double-digit games in four of those six years, and has generally kept the Badgers competitive.
His run also includes three trips to a New Year’s Six bowl game, including a Rose Bowl appearance in 2019. Wisconsin took a small step back last season, going 4-3, but Chryst’s offense was significantly hampered by injuries and COVID-19 protocols.
Gard has not had quite as much success since taking over for Bo Ryan after the 2016 season. Gard’s overall record at Wisconsin is 119-70, and he’s made it past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament just once.
However, he was won 20+ games in three of his five seasons, and just signed a quality recruiting class. According to 247Sports Composite rankings, Wisconsin’s class ranks No. 32 nationally and No. 5 in the Big Ten.
