Wisconsin defensive assistant Alex Grinch is moving on from the Badgers, heading to the Big 12 after just one season in Madison.

On Tuesday, UCF confirmed that Grinch was accepting the defensive coordinator job under Scott Frost. The former Nebraska head coach who previously had a head coaching stint with the Knights recently returned for another tenure with the program.

“I’m honored and excited to join UCF as the defensive coordinator,” said Grinch. “I want to thank Coach Frost for the opportunity to be part of this outstanding program. UCF as a tradition of explosive, high-energy football, and I look forward to building a defensive unit that matches that identity with speed, toughness and relentless effort.”

Grinch served just one season on Luke Fickell’s Wisconsin staff as the co-DC and safeties coach. He came to Madison after previously serving on Lincoln Riley’s staff from 2019-23, first at Oklahoma and then at USC from 22-23 as the DC and safeties coach for Riley.

The Trojans parted ways with Grinch as part of a massive defensive staff overhaul for Riley this past offseason. However, it took just one season before Grinch was able to land another coordinating job, and this one takes him to the Big 12.

We’ll see how it works out with Grinch and Frost teaming up at UCF.
