Michael Finley is regarded as Wisconsin basketball royalty — and soon, his number will hang in the rafters of the Kohl Center.

Finley’s No. 24 will be retired this season during a halftime ceremony, UW basketball announced Friday morning. A specific date and time haven’t yet been announced.

Finley is considered one of the best players in Badgers history, becoming the first Badger to score 2,000 points while playing from 1991-95. After graduation, he was selected 21st overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 1995 NBA Draft and played 15 years in the NBA. He won an NBA title with the San Antonio Spurs in 2007 and was a two-time All-Star.

Currently, Finley serves as the Dallas Mavericks’ Vice President of Basketball Operations.

He’ll be the third Wisconsin player to have his number retired, following Ab Nicholas and Frank Kaminsky. But what’s interesting is that players will still be able to wear 24 after the retirement ceremony.

Still, it’s about time.
