Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz has had better days at the office.

The sophomore went 22-for-37 for 185 yards, no touchdowns and 2 interceptions in the Badgers’ Week 1 loss to Penn State at Camp Randall Stadium.

It wasn’t the performance Mertz — or Wisconsin fans — hoped for, but Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst doesn’t sound too worried about how his quarterback will bounce back.

“I’ve liked the way that he’s handled it and approached it from personal interactions with him. I think that he’s trying to do the right thing and owning the things where he can be better,” Chryst told reporters on Monday in his weekly press conference. “I think he’s got good energy and understands his role in this whole big picture.

“I’ve spent time with him, it’s hard for everyone, right? But it’s an opportunity, and opportunity to get better and I am confident he’ll do that.”

Mertz and the Badgers can get back on track this weekend when they take on Eastern Michigan on Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. CT.
