Wisconsin reportedly finalizing offensive coordinator hire to replace Phil Longo
Wisconsin has reached an agreement with Kansas assistant coach Jeff Grimes to become the Badgers’ new offensive coordinator, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.
While no official announcement from Wisconsin had been made at the time of publication, Kansas has already officially announced it has elevated one of its assistants to take over Grimes’ spot on their staff.
Grimes played offensive tackle for UTEP in the late 1980s and, when he got his start in coaching in 1995, did so as an offensive line assistant. He coached the o-line for Boise State (2000), Arizona State (2001-03), BYU (2004-06), and Colorado (2007-08) before moving to the SEC.
Grimes coached offensive linemen at Auburn from 2009-12 and LSU from 2014-17. He was on staff for Auburn’s 2010 run to the national championship — a year in which Cam Newton won the Heisman.
In 2018, Grimes got his first shot to coordinate an offense when he was brought back to BYU. He coached the Cougars for 3 years before moving to Baylor for 3 seasons. He just wrapped his first season with Kansas after being brought in last offseason to replace Andy Kotelnicki.
Kansas currently ranks seventh nationally in opponent-adjusted EPA per play, per Game on Paper. It is also ninth nationally in offensive success rate.
The offense featured dynamic quarterback Jalon Daniels and bruising tailback Devin Neal. From an advanced numbers perspective, the Kansas offensive line was one of the best in the country. Per Game on Paper, Kansas ranked in the 92nd percentile nationally in line yards, in the 89th percentile in stuff rate, and in the 96th percentile for rushing EPA per play.
Entering conference championship weekend, Neal was fifth in the Big 12 in rushing with 1,266 yards and 16 touchdowns on 5.8 yards per carry. Kansas averaged 63 plays per game with a 59% run rate.
Wisconsin had a 52% run rate for an offense that ranked 107th in opponent-adjusted EPA per play and 90th in success rate.
The Badgers lost their final 5 games this season to finish 5-7 and end a bowl streak that had spanned 2 decades. Coach Luke Fickell fired offensive coordinator Phil Longo in November.
